ANDREW R. CHAMBERS JR.

FABRICATOR/BLACKSMITH

LOCATION: Amherst, NY

My name is Andrew R. Chambers Jr., and my life’s work has been dedicated to the art and craft of blacksmithing and metal fabrication. From the moment I first picked up a hammer, I knew that this was more than just a profession for me—it was a calling. My father, a welder who wore his Red Wing boots with pride, instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of craftsmanship. Today, I continue that legacy, not just in my work but in the way I live my life.

One of the defining moments of my career came with the opportunity to work on a gate for the Lincoln Catafalque Room in the U.S. Capital, my first major project fabricated out of bronze instead of the steel I was accustomed to. Bronze is a notoriously challenging material, requiring precise control of low heat to avoid damage. It’s a metal that tests your patience and skill at every turn. Not many fabricators have the expertise to work with bronze, but I embraced the challenge, knowing that this was a rare opportunity to push the boundaries of my craft. The experience not only honed my skills but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate balance required to work with such a demanding material.

I actively collaborate with several trade organizations, including the Stained Glass Association of America. I participate in events where skilled blacksmiths and fabricators demonstrate their techniques, inspiring and educating both the public and aspiring tradespeople. These events are more than just demonstrations; they are a way to keep the traditions of our craft alive, to show that the skills of the past have a vital place in the present and future.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of passing on the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired to the next generation of tradespeople. For the past 25 years, I’ve mentored local high school students enrolled in trades programs, helping them discover their own paths in this rewarding field. There’s a unique satisfaction in watching young people develop their talents and take pride in their work, knowing that I’ve played a small part in shaping their futures.

My connection to Red Wing boots is deeply personal. My father wore Red Wings throughout his career, a tradition I have continued for over 20 years. This tradition is now being passed on to my son, who, at 15, has already begun working alongside me. He wears the same pair of Red Wings that I once did, and it fills me with pride to see him stepping into the same boots, both literally and figuratively, that have carried our family through generations.

My work is more than just a job; it’s a legacy. Each piece I create is a testament to the dedication, skill, and love I have for this craft. Through my mentoring, community involvement, and the passing down of traditions within my own family, I strive to ensure that the art of blacksmithing not only endures but thrives for generations to come.

THERE'S A STORY WORN INTO EVERY PAIR OF RED WINGS.
