OPERATING ENGINEER

LOCATION: Watertown, WI

I never imagined I'd find myself where I am today—operating heavy equipment on some of the most significant highway projects in Wisconsin. But here I am, an Operating Engineer with more than 25 years of experience under my belt and a sense of pride that words can hardly capture. My journey began when I was 38, a single mom needing to support my family. Starting in the trades at that age was no small feat, but I have always believed in the power of perseverance.

From day one, I knew that this work was something I could be proud of. Whether it's creating new roads, highways, housing, or commercial developments, it is incredibly fulfilling to see a project take shape from start to finish, knowing that I played a part in it. I find immense satisfaction in driving by a completed project years later and thinking, "I helped build that." It’s not just a job for me; it’s a legacy that I leave behind, a tangible mark on the world that will stand for decades. My Red Wing King Toe boots have been my trusty companions through it all, reliable enough to last for several seasons, no matter where I find myself.

One of the most monumental projects I’ve worked on is the multi-year, multi-phase “Zoo” Interchange near Milwaukee, one of the oldest and busiest interchanges in Wisconsin. This project holds a special place in my heart, not only because of its scale but also because of the number of female trade workers involved. Seeing so many women contributing to a project of that magnitude was inspiring. It was a reminder that the construction industry is evolving, slowly but surely becoming more inclusive.

That’s why I’m also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of tradesworkers. As a part-time instructor at the Operating Engineers Local 139 Training Center, I get to share my knowledge and experience with those who are just starting their careers. There’s nothing quite like watching someone learn and grow, knowing that I’m helping to shape the future of this industry. I take great pride in being a mentor, guiding others as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of this profession.

Beyond the classroom, I collaborate with several national and international trade organizations to create a more equitable work environment for women and minorities. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be to break into this field, especially for those of us who don’t fit the traditional mold. We still have a long way to go, but every small step forward is a victory.

At the end of the day, my career has been about building something bigger than myself. Looking back, I can see how far I’ve come since those early days when I was just trying to make ends meet. I’ve turned farm fields into subdivisions and watched as those subdivisions became homes for families. Every time I pass by one of these projects, I’m reminded of the lasting impact of my work.

I may have started later in life, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This work has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I will carry with me for the rest of my days.
