SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
LOCATION: Nutley, NJ
My name is Miguel A. Rueda, and I've had the privilege of working on one of the most iconic construction sites in the world—the World Trade Center. My journey with this monumental project began just a few years after the tragic events of 9/11, which I witnessed firsthand. The memory of those planes crashing into the Twin Towers is seared into my mind, and it’s this very memory that fuels my dedication to the work I do.
My work at the World Trade Center began in the initial stages of clearing debris and preparing the site for construction. I was there when the ground was still full of mud and debris, through the challenges of Superstorm Sandy, and on to the final turnover of the buildings. My role on this project evolved over time, and I eventually took on the position of project manager for the installation of the security systems protecting the entire World Trade Center site, including work in the 9/11 Memorial and the Freedom Tower. This was no small task, as it involved overseeing the installation of fire alarms, network fibers, and other critical systems that keep the building and its occupants safe.
For nearly two decades, my Red Wing boots have carried me across the entire World Trade Center site. From the subway tracks buried five stories below ground to the very tip of the Freedom Tower spire, I’ve walked almost every surface. I’ve spent countless hours on this site, regularly covering up to six miles a day, in every season. Through it all, my Red Wing boots have never failed me. I swear by them, and I always tell my coworkers that they need to get themselves a pair of Red Wings if they want to keep their feet comfortable.
I started my career as a fire alarm inspector and installer. My background in electronics gave me the technical foundation I needed to excel in this field. I became certified as an alarm installer and tester, and I spent years perfecting my craft. I learned how to direct and inspect the work of electricians, ensuring that every wire was in place and every system functioned as it should.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been the opportunity to serve as a mentor to new trades workers. I find fulfillment in training new project managers to read, design, and modify plans, teaching them how to bring designs to life. I believe in the importance of passing on knowledge and experience, and I’m passionate about bringing more women and minorities into the industry. This is a field that offers so many opportunities, and I want to make sure that it’s accessible to everyone.
As I reflect on my career, I’m filled with a deep sense of pride. I’ve had the honor of contributing to the rebuilding of a symbol of resilience and strength. The World Trade Center stands tall today, not just because of the steel and concrete that went into its construction, but because of the dedication and hard work of the thousands of trades workers who poured their hearts into this project. I’m proud to be one of them, and I’ll carry the lessons I’ve learned and the experiences I’ve had with me for the rest of my life.
